Due to the growth of the university, university facilities and the numbers of students attending university, and following development of Loughborough town centre, the town population density is predicted to increase. This growth of populations may put a strain on current public transport in the areas of interest.
Developing the local, existing public transport system although may resolve the issue; it is likely to bring up further issues, such as increase in congestion and poorer air quality. Additionally implementation of current forms of public transport usually results in the use of ground space e.g. railway, that could be prioritised for other purposes, such as roads. Since a monorail has a few points of contact with the ground, it minimises the distortion of the current public transport options and daily activities.
Despite the fact that monorail transport solution is overall beneficial for current situation, it has its own problems with designing and building. This project will focus on overcoming the issues of budget restrained and ergonomic problems that arise with the complex, multi-user structure and design an ergonomic solution to deal with the human traffic in Loughborough.
The solution to the suggested issue, will be a monorail system that can create an additional public transport option across Loughborough University and town, that will neither take up ground space nor create additional congestion on the roads as busses or trains would.
The system that is proposed has three interconnected tracks housing 1 train each. Two of the discussed trucks will run parallel across University campus with stops including: Burleigh Court, Pilkington Library, EHB and Shireley Pearce Square. The other one will be connecting Loughborough Train station, Regent Place Retail Park and Shireley Pearce Square. The whole system would be automatic although it can be overridden by the operator staff, located in a control room, in event of emergencies. The five staff required to operate the system included a cleaner, a mechanic to fix minor problems and lastly the three overseeing control room staff.
The general spread of the finances across the whole project are as follows; the track lengths, including all the pillars required, spur shed tracks and turning points cost £24,800 in total. The total cost of the three vehicles used in the system came to £65,400. The five staff, twenty-four hour shifts came to a cost of £50,000. The largest cost of the project was the stations as six of varied sizes were required, costing £94,500. Finally the last cost to the project to be accounted for was the control room coming in at £15,200 as very little space was required to build it.
